USA Wins Double Gold at World Mountain Running Championships

Tirana, Albania – September 11 –  The USA set the bar at the 27th World Mountain Running Championships held today, September 11, in Tirana, Albania, showcased by the gold-medal performances of Huntingdon, Vermont’s Kasie Enman and Bend, Oregon’s Max King.
“In my nine years as team leader, I’ve never been more proud of our athletes than I am today,” said Richard Bolt, “Kasie and Max’s performances blew me away. They made winning a World Championship look easy.”
“This is the first time I have represented the U.S. in a World Mountain Running Championship,” said Enman, “I’m very excited. I did not expect to win.”
With her victory Enman becomes the first senior woman from the U.S. to earn an individual gold medal. She led the senior women to a fourth place finish. Her time was 40:39 over the 8.59 kilometer course. She was followed by Megan Lund in 12th place with a time of 43:56, Michele Suszek in 21st place with a time of 44:48, and Brandy Erholtz in 26th place with a time of 45:56.
“It’s an historic day for our women,” said women’s team manager Ellen Miller, “Kasie’s victory honors the past 17 years of U.S. women’s mountain running.”
For King, this was his second consecutive appearance at the World Mountain Running Championships, and he bettered last year’s 16th place performance with a decisive victory today. “I’m tired, but I feel very good,” said King, “This is my first individual medal (last year’s senior men’s team took the silver), and I’m proud to have it in an up/down year especially inAlbania.”
King’s gold medal becomes only the second gold for a U.S. male. Jay Johnson, owner of Fleet Feet Sports in Boulder,Colorado, previously won gold for Team USA in 1989 and since that time, Johnson has been an ardent supporter of Team USA.
About his gold medal performance King said, “It was a good course for me having both the hard technical uphill and the fast and somewhat technical downhill. I had no idea I was in the lead until I crossed the finish line. The Ugandan runner was 30 seconds ahead of me at the top of the third climb and I passed him with about 800 meters to go. I didn’t think that he was the one I was trying to catch, I thought it was a lapped runner.”
King led the men’s team to a fourth place finish with his time of 52:06 over the 12.7 kilometer course. He was followed by teammates Joseph Gray in eleventh place with a time of 55:33, Ryan Woods in 49th place in 1:01:51, Matt Byrne in 51st place in 1:01:58, Tommy Manning in 79th place in 1:08:10, and Jared Scott in 96th place in 1:20:21.
“It was strong team finish, but we were obviously disappointed that we didn’t finish in the medals,” said King.
Prior to the senior races, the junior men and women competed. In the junior men’s 8.59 kilometer race, University ofRichmond sophomore Ryan Lee posted an impressive 11th place finish. He was followed by fellow Spyder Billy Fayette in 28thplace and Oliver Bear Don’t Walk IV in 54th place. The junior men finished tenth.
The junior women raced 4.49 kilometers. Krisztina Dearborn, a sophomore at Central Connecticut State University, finished in 24th place followed by Johns Hopkins sophomore Lara Shegoski in 29th place, and University of Richmond freshman Clare Moretz in 30th place.
“I’m tremendously proud of the efforts of our junior athletes today,” said Paul Kirsch, manager of the junior team, “They raced against the best in the world and held their own. I’m grateful to their college coaches who realize the tremendous opportunity this gives a collegiate athlete to race on a world stage.”

The Junior Team joins senior athletes Max King, Joe Gray, Ryan Woods, Matt Byrne, Tommy Manning, Jared Scott, Kasie Enman, Michele Suszek, Brandy Erholtz and Megan Lund, who will compete in Albania at the World Mountain Running Championships.

Last year at the world championships in Slovenia, the U.S. Men won their first-ever silver team medal.  The junior women and senior women have previously won team and individual medals.  The team looks to capitalize on that success in 2011 in Tirana.

“I’m really excited about this year’s junior team” said Paul Kirsch, Team Manager of the Juniors.  “The course in Tirana is a fast one and the combination of strength and speed that our juniors have this year gives them a good shot at being on the podium.”

The World Championships alternate between up only and up/down courses every other year with 2011 being an up/down year.  The junior women will  race one 4.5km up/down lap while the junior men will race two 4.5km laps.  The senior men’s race is three laps and the senior women, like the junior men, will race two.

Junior US Mountain Running Team - 2011 - Call for candidates

From Paul Kirsch:

Hello Coaches and Athletes,

As we prepare for this year's USA Mountain Running Championships next weekend at Cranmore Mountain in New Hampshire, it is also time to send out a call for candidates for our junior mountain running team.

This year's World Mountain Running Championships takes place on September 11th in Tirana, Albania.  The course for the Championships alternate between uphill only and up/down every other year.  In 2011 the course is an up/down course.   Here is a link to the Championship website:   http://www.wmrc2011.al/     This year's course is a pretty fast one for mountain running, with an elevation gain of approximately 280 meters per lap.   The junior girls run a single 4.49km lap, the junior boys run two laps for a total distance of 8.59 km.  Here is a link to the course profile:  http://www.wmrc2011.al/Courses.aspx

Team members selected will have a part of their airfare to Albania covered.  We continue to fundraise to cover as much airfare as we can.  Your lodging and food while you are in Albania is all covered.

We are looking to finalize the Junior team by July 10th so that airline tickets can be purchased and people have adequate time to acquire passports.  If you have an athlete who would be interested in applying for the team or know someone who would be, please do the following:

1. Send an email to myself, Paul Kirsch at pkirsch2@gmail.com.
2. In the email include a running resume for the team candidate that includes personal bests and noteworthy performances.
3. In the email include a letter of support from a parent and/or coach.  If you are entering college in the fall, your college coach's support is imperative.
4. Junior men should have a 16:45 or better 5 km road or XC time and Junior women should have a time of 19:30 or better. Equivalent times from alternate race distances will be considered.
5. All runners must be current USATF members and US citizens (USATF membership can be obtained after the team members are announced)
6. Team members will need a valid passport for travel
7. Junior athletes must be between the ages of 15 and 19 on December 31, 2001 to be eligible.

If anyone is interested, any junior team candidates are welcome to race at the USA Mountain Championships this coming weekend in New Hampshire.  This is not a requirement to make the team but for those in the region, it is a great opportunity to receive exposure to highly competitive mountain running.  Contact me for more information if any students are interested in competing.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.  If you have any questions, please email me or call me at the numbers below.

Best Regards,

Paul Kirsch

World Mountain Running Championship - Day 3

Pictured above is the start of the technical meeting where pre-race details were confirmed. The weather will be cool and cloudy but not raining. The junior women and junior men will both start at 10:30 AM local time Sunday. The senior women will run the same 8.4k course and start at 11:00 AM. The senior mens 11.9k course starts in Sierre at 11:15 AM. All the US athletes are charged up and ready to go, spending their final hours tonight talking strategy with their teammates. Unofficial results will be available on this blog tomorrow afternoon.

World Mountain Running Championship - Day 3

Above is a picture of the US team marching in the opening ceremonies. It's a cool 50ish degrees and raining but the energy level is high as the athletes are looking forward to tomorrows races. We marched 500m from the town center at the base of the "funicular" to Hes-co, the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland. In 1 hour, I'll be at the technical meeting where race numbers will be distributed.

World Mountain Running Championship - Day 3

Pictured above is a photo of the Norwegian delegate presenting information about a possible course for the 2010 World Mountain Running Championship (Songefjord, Norway). We also learned that the 2009 Championship will not be in Italy. While the local organising committee was funded and prepared, the Italian Athletic Association would not support the Championshipdue to other commitments in Italy. Scotland announced an intention to bid for the 2011 Championship. The Pikes Peak Hillclimb will be the 2010 World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship. More info later today. Next up is the parade of nations and opening ceremonies - both of which could be re-located or shortened due to weather. Currently it's raining and 45 degrees.

World Mountain Running Championship - Day 3

This morning I'm off to Sierre for the World Mountain Running Congress meetings. Reps from 39 countries will convene to vote on where the Championship will be held in 2009. Later today we'll have the parade of nations and opening ceremonies. Tonight will be the pre-race Technical Meeting where we'll recieve race numbers and timing chips.

Richard Bolt, Team Leader

World Mountain Running Championship - Day 2

This afternoon I ran the 8.33k course with the junior Mens team. Starting in the narrow streets of Venthone at 840m above sea level, the course ran along paved roads, gravel roads, single track trail, grass fields on the way to the finish in the town center of Crans-Montana at 1500m above sea level. Only one of the 4 junior men have run in a World Championship - all agreed that a conserative start would be wise as there are plenty of passing opportunities in the 2nd half of the race. Many first time juniors tend to start too quickly and loose large amounts of time later in the race. The junior womens race starts in Montana-Village at 1190m above sea level and joins the junior mens course 3.5k from the finish. The junior womens course has a very fast downhill start followed by rolling uphills before the final big climb 1.5k from the finish. Tomorrow will be a rest day for the athletes as team staff will be attending the World Congress and Technical Meetings.
